Ghosts of Gallows Hill Starting Location: The Steps of the Old Courthouse / Lynchburg Museum (901 Court Street)

Towering over downtown Lynchburg, Court House Hill has served as the civic, religious, and legal heart of the city since the 19th century. But beneath the grand architecture and the brick-paved streets lies a darker, more somber history. For generations, this hill was the epicenter of local capital punishment—a place where the law meted out its final, absolute sentences before massive public crowds.

Join us after hours for Ghosts of Gallows Hill, a gripping, historical walking tour that traces the footsteps of the condemned. Guided by the flickering glow of lanterns, we will gather on the historic steps of the Old Courthouse at the Lynchburg Museum, standing precisely where high-profile trials sealed the fates of the city’s most notorious prisoners.

From there, we will navigate the historic legal district by lantern light, examining meticulously documented court records, desperate jailbreak attempts, and the grim realities of 19th-century justice.

What really happened in 1878?

The tour follows a downward path along the historic corridor, culminating near the striking architecture of the Court Street Baptist Church. Here, we will confront a tragedy born of sheer panic rather than the executioner’s rope: the catastrophic 1878 stampede. You will stand on the very ground where a false alarm of a structural collapse turned a crowded, joyous church gathering into a scene of absolute chaos and heartbreak, leaving a permanent scar on the community.

This vicinity also bordered the city’s heavily fortified old jail yard, making it the perfect final stop to reflect on the thin line between order and tragedy in the Hill City. This isn’t a tour of theatrical jumpscares; it is an unvarnished, atmospheric exploration of the tragic, the bizarre, and the deeply haunting history that the cobblestones of Court House Hill tried to wash away.
